Contact Lenses for Children

Contact Lenses for Children

Kids can wear contact lenses as long as they are mature enough to take care of them correctly and have parental guidance to make certain they are safe. There are many types of contact lenses designed to address various conditions, and our optometrist at Within Sight Vision Center will evaluate your child’s eyes to determine the type of contact lenses that best suit your child’s needs.

How Old Do Children need to be To Wear Contacts?

Most children between the ages of 8 and 13 are old enough to wear contact lenses and take care of them safely. It just depends on their maturity and level of activity. Our eye doctor will work with you to determine if your child is ready for this kind of sight enhancement.

Many kids love the ability to wear contacts instead of glasses. They are especially useful for children who play sports in which glasses can be easily broken. Contact lenses also give them a wider range of vision and may help them perform better in sports. Contacts may also improve your child’s self-esteem and lower his or her anxiety levels.

What are the Types of Contact Lenses?

Contact lenses are available in many types, including rigid gas permeable, soft daily wear, extended-wear, disposable extended wear, and planned replacement. Our optometrist will recommend the best type for your child.  Many times daily disposable contact lenses are recommended for children.  Not only do daily disposable contact lenses will help reduce the possibility of an infection they are also extremely comfortable.

How to Take Care of Contact Lenses?

Your child must be sure to keep their contacts sterile to prevent eye infections. In most cases, the easiest type of contact lenses for children to wear is disposable daily lenses. These lenses are removed and disposed of every day. This eliminates the need for children to place their lenses in a case with fresh lens solution every night. Of course, they will still need to wash their hands with soap and water, rinse and dry them well before removing or putting in contacts to avoid infections. A backup pair of glasses with a current prescription is always recommended if your child does not wish to wear contacts or the contacts fall out.
